Disaster Resilience in Restaurants: The Role of Graphic Design in Hurricane Mitigation and Recovery

Workshop Description:

Create a step-by-step communication plan through graphic design during a hurricane threat. This course covers the most comprehensive illustration program used by professional designers today.

General Objective

Students will create and illustrate a clearly outlined course of action to help the restaurant respond effectively to a natural disaster. Thought this experience the student will gain a more in-depth understanding of the computer software used in graphic design environments and integrate this knowledge in restaurant hurricane preparation and recovery.

I. Graphic Identity (importance of design in disaster contingency plan)

  1. Logo
  2. Typography
  3. Color palette

II. Branding materials

  1. Social Media Posts
  2. Flyers
  3. Posters

III. Post Design – Create and Design a social media post and print poster with emergency numbers and contact list available for employees and the community. Text will be provided.

IV. Infographic Design – Basic emergency kit if a hurricane is forecasted. Text will be provided.

V. Handout design – Hurricane ‘hacks’ list before the disaster

Workshop Procedure
