Descripción: The objective of this project is to explore the relationship between the use of Spanish or English POGIL activities and student engagement as well as science identity development. POGIL is an acronym for Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning. It is a student-centered, group-learning instructional strategy and philosophy developed through research on how students learn best. The project proposes to study parallel sections that will complete at least six POGIL activities in Spanish or English, which will be incorporated as follows: Group A will be all in Spanish, and Group B will be all in English. A total of four sections with 30 students each will be studied: one section per language per semester in 2023-2024. While a reverse counterbalancing ABBA design may be more rigorous, we are opting for a more simple comparison design for this pilot study. The outcomes of this proposal will serve The POGIL Project as a foundation to propose new working groups focusing on the importance of making POGIL activities accessible to all, including multi-language support.
